Veteran identity modernization

DEPARTMENT OF VETERANS AFFAIRS (VA): A faster, easier sign-in experience for veterans accessing VA services

VA digital services are used by millions of veterans every month. To access VA services, veterans faced a confusing sign-in process, with multiple sign-in pathways and credential options. The credential service providers (CSP) in place had performance issues and did not meet modern security or user experience standards.

With TMF support, VA retired the My HealtheVet user ID and password and support for DS Logon. VA’s Office of the Chief Technology Officer led the effort with support from two contractor teams and deep partnership from the Veterans Health Administration and Veteran Experience Office. The transition required coordination across VA with hundreds of people supporting veterans through in-person assistance at facilities nationwide. The approach retired the My HealtheVet credential first in March 2025, followed by use of DS Logon at VA in November 2025. The team implemented digital campaigns, content updates, cross-organizational trainings, and in-person sign-in events to support veterans through the change.

Impact includes simplified access for veterans who now use one of two modern credentials instead of four, enhanced security through platforms meeting current standards, and improved reliability compared to legacy systems.
