Network modernization
DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE (USDA): Securing a network that supports food safety, farmer assistance, and beyond
USDA needed an updated, secure, and reliable network that would protect their operations from cyber attacks and enable improvements to better meet its mission. Prior to TMF involvement, the network was not equipped to handle expanded program needs for throughput and security. In addition, these seventeen fragmented networks of varying hardware, standards, and protocols were difficult and costly to maintain.
With TMF support, USDA transitioned into a single enterprise, secure, high performing, broadband network capable of supporting the USDA Digital Enterprise. Seventeen component agency networks were consolidated into one office network with separate Internet of Things, Guest, Research, and Security functional networks.
Benefits included a transformed Software-Defined Networking (SDN) Infrastructure, modernized service delivery points and Voice services, elimination of risk from outdated services, improved security posture, and adequate capacity for thousands of bandwidth-starved sites. The project resulted in expected 40% cost savings starting in FY26 through the end of the project period. Additional benefits included relieving remote sites starved for bandwidth with a minimum of 20 to 50 Mbps, and eliminating 90% to over 100% TIC utilization with Managed Trusted Internet Protocol Service utilizing dynamic capacity SDN. An example of mission impact: 40% of Forest Service sites had 1.5 to 7.6 Mbps and now enjoy 20 Mbps or higher thus enabling expanding the use of applications and technologies in program delivery that weren’t feasible prior to modernization.
