Rebuilding Weather.gov

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE, NATIONAL OCEANIC AND ATMOSPHERIC ADMINISTRATION (DOC-NOAA): Delivering critical weather information to save lives and property when ‘every word and every minute matters’

Challenge: Weather.gov provides life-saving forecasts and warnings for natural disasters. Today, the website is difficult to maintain and improve, has an unreliable infrastructure, and is not mobile friendly. The Application Programming Interface (API) also has challenges, creating undependable content and hurdles for private businesses and the public to navigate.

Approach: With TMF support, NOAA will redevelop Weather.gov and its API to:

  • Rebuild Weather.gov to be more streamlined and agile
  • Reach more Americans with life- and property-saving information
  • Comply with 508 and accessibility best practices
  • Provide improved access to National Weather Service data
