Data modernization

DEPARTMENT OF LABOR (DOL): Better access to critical DOL data for government agencies and the public

DOL provides commonly requested data on mission support, enforcement, benefits, employment, and training to government agencies and for the public including developers, journalists, and researchers. Prior to the modernization work, DOL lacked consistency in data source maturity and modernization, operational reporting, and the workforce required to utilize data as a strategic asset to effectively and efficiently achieve mission outcomes.

With TMF support, the agency strengthened its DOL Enterprise Data Platform (EDP) to mature Data Management, Advanced Analytics, and built a DOL API for greater data sharing and insights that aligned with the DOL Data Strategy. This work has accelerated modernization at the agency, reduced technical debt and enabled scalable cloud-native services. The completed work benefits DOL enforcement agencies in their compliance and reporting work. It also empowers the public with easy access to vital labor data, supports workforce initiatives by facilitating integration with applications, enabling users to easily view labor enforcement data and track trends.

Impacts include a massive improvement in data reporting and analytics. Reports are now generated in minutes instead of weeks. Several agencies began using the EDP and DOL is continually engaging other agencies to demonstrate advantages and opportunities for improved data quality, consolidation, and consistency. There is now a renewed focus on data quality and data mining to create a singular source of truth.
